What to Do if Your EBT Balance Runs Out Early

It can be stressful when your EBT balance gets low before the next deposit arrives. This is a common challenge, but you are not without support. Several strategies can help you bridge the gap and access food assistance when you need it most.

Apply for Expedited (Emergency) SNAP

If you have an immediate need, you may be able to get an EBT deposit in as little as seven days through expedited processing. You may qualify if your household meets specific low-income and resource limits, or if you are a migrant or seasonal farmworker.

Go to NH EASY and start a new application. On the first screen, check the box that you need “food assistance right away” and type “EXPEDITED PROCESSING” in any notes fields.
Upload any proof you have on hand, like recent pay stubs or a rent bill. The seven-day clock starts once your application is submitted, so don’t delay.
Call DHHS Customer Service at 1-844-275-3447 immediately after you submit. Ask for an interview “today or tomorrow” and record your case number.
Alternatively, visit a local DHHS office, write “EXPEDITED SNAP” on a paper application, and request a same-day interview.

Ask DHHS to Recalculate Your Regular SNAP Amount

If your financial situation has changed, you can ask DHHS to reevaluate your benefit amount. Gather documents showing the change, such as a termination letter, a new child-care invoice, or medical bills over $35 per month.

Log in to NH EASY to Report a Change, or call 1-844-275-3447 to state that your income or expenses have changed.
Upload or fax your proof and get a confirmation. Ask for written confirmation that the change was received.
DHHS should issue a new decision notice, often within ten days. If not, call again to speak with a supervisor or file a Fair Hearing request to preserve any back benefits.

Use Statewide Gap-Fillers

When your EBT balance is empty, statewide programs can provide immediate help. Check the New Hampshire Food Bank’s Mobile Food Pantry schedule for a drive-thru where you can get a free box of groceries.

If you need help with SNAP paperwork or finding a local pantry, you can call the NH Food Bank’s SNAP Outreach line at 1-877-347-7627. You can also dial 211 or visit 211nh.org and say “food” to get a list of all food resources in your zip code.
