Do EBT Benefits Expire or Roll Over?

Your balance will stay on the card as long as the account remains active. Any time you make a purchase or withdrawal, the state considers the account active, which resets the aging period for your entire remaining balance.
If an account is inactive for nine consecutive months, those funds are permanently removed. The state provides at least 30 days' written notice before this happens, and making a transaction before the deadline will stop the process.
Because the Hoosier Works card itself never expires, you can still use any remaining funds after your case closes. The balance is available until it reaches the nine-month inactivity limit.

What to Do if Your EBT Balance Runs Out Early

Ask for an Emergency SNAP Issuance
If you have no food left and very little cash, you may qualify for an emergency SNAP issuance. You can request this by calling the Division of Family Resources (DFR) at 800-403-0864 and stating you need “expedited SNAP.” You will also need to start a new application online or in person that same day.
To qualify for expedited SNAP, your household must have under $150 in gross income and under $100 in assets, or your rent and utilities must exceed your income. DFR is required to interview you within one day. You only need to bring proof of identity, like a driver's license, to get started.
If approved, the emergency benefits are loaded onto your Hoosier Works card, often within 72 hours. This special issuance does not change your regular monthly deposit date. Other required paperwork can be submitted within 30 days.
Re-evaluate Your SNAP Budget
If your household situation has changed recently, it’s a good idea to re-evaluate your SNAP budget right away. Indiana requires you to report a change within 10 days if your income drops, your hours are cut, or your shelter costs go up.
