Do EBT Benefits Expire or Roll Over?

In Utah, any unused SNAP or cash assistance funds on your EBT card automatically carry over to the next month. There is no cap on how much can accumulate through these rollovers, giving you flexibility in how you use your benefits.

Seeing a zero balance on your EBT card before the month is over can be incredibly stressful. It's a situation many households face, but it doesn't have to mean going without food. Several immediate strategies can help you access food assistance and adjust your benefits for the better.

Apply for Expedited SNAP Benefits

If your card is empty, you may qualify for emergency SNAP. This is for households with very low income and cash on hand, or whose housing costs are more than their resources. The only proof you need to provide is your identity.

Gather an ID, such as a driver’s license, state ID, or voter card.
Start a new application on MyCase and check the box indicating you need food within seven days. You can also call DWS Eligibility at 1-866-435-7414.
Complete a phone interview on the same day. If lines are busy, visit any Employment Center for an “expedited SNAP interview.”
Your card will be loaded within seven calendar days after your identity is verified.

If you are told you do not qualify but still have no food, request a supervisor review. The DWS is under a court order to issue eligible benefits on time.

Ask DWS to Recalculate Your SNAP

If your household circumstances have changed, you can ask for a recalculation. This includes recent pay cuts, higher rent, new medical bills, or anyone moving in or out. Gather proof of any change that lowers your income or raises your expenses.

Confirm you have requested a “supplemental issuance” so any extra amount is added before your next deposit.
Check your MyCase messages within two business days and return any verification forms.
If the adjustment is denied, you can file a fair-hearing request within 90 days.

While waiting for benefit adjustments, you can get immediate help from a food pantry. The Utah Food Bank has locations and mobile routes that span every county in the state.

Open the “Get Help” map, enter your ZIP code, and filter for a “Mobile Pantry” or “No-ID Pantry” to find a same-day distribution site. Click on a location for its hours and rules, and remember to bring sturdy bags. Mobile Pantry stops often provide extra food if you volunteer to help.
