Your EBT card holds benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and/or EBT Cash from programs like Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). Keeping track of your funds helps with household budgeting and prevents you from running short at the checkout counter.

This guide outlines several ways to check your EBT balance in Utah, from using a mobile app to calling EBT Customer Service.

How to Check Your EBT Balance in Utah

Utah residents can check their SNAP and EBT Cash balances in several ways. You can go online through the ConnectEBT portal, use the Benny mobile app, call the 24-hour customer service line, use an ATM for cash benefits, or simply look at your last grocery store receipt. Each method provides access to your current funds.

1. Check Online via ConnectEBT

Checking your balance online involves using Utah's official ConnectEBT web portal.

  1. Go to the ConnectEBT site and choose “Utah EBT.”

  2. Select “Login to your account” and enter your User ID and Password.

  3. If you are a new user, create a user account. You will need to enter your Utah ZIP code, date of birth, full 16-digit Horizon EBT card number, and create a password to register.

  4. The “Account Summary” page will display your current SNAP and EBT Cash balances. You can click “Transaction History” for more details.

2. Use the Benny Mobile App

Using the Benny app is another way to see your real-time SNAP and EBT Cash balances.

  1. Install Benny from the Apple App Store or Google Play.

  2. Open the app, create a profile, then tap “Add Card” to enter your 16-digit Utah Horizon EBT number and ZIP code.

  3. Your food and cash balances will refresh automatically on the home screen. Tap either balance to view your transaction history.

Benny also provides cash back on qualifying EBT purchases at many large retailers, including Costco, Walmart, Walgreens, and Trader Joe’s.

3. Call EBT Customer Service

Calling the automated phone line gives you access to your account information 24/7.

  1. Dial the toll-free number at 1-800-997-4444. You can choose English, Spanish, Navajo, or Mandarin, and an interpreter option is available for other languages.

  2. Enter your 16-digit card number followed by your 4-digit PIN to hear your current SNAP and EBT Cash balances.

  3. You can stay on the line to hear your last ten transactions.

4. Use an ATM

Visiting an ATM allows you to perform a balance inquiry for your EBT Cash account.

  1. Insert your Horizon EBT card at an ATM showing the Quest, MoneyPass®, or Allpoint® logo and enter your PIN.

  2. Choose “Balance Inquiry” and then “Checking.”

  3. The machine will print or display your EBT Cash balance. This service is free at in-network, surcharge-free machines.

You can find a surcharge-free ATM near you by using the Allpoint Locator.

Since ATMs only show your EBT Cash funds, you can check your SNAP balance by calling customer service or using the Benny app.

5. Check Your Last Store Receipt

Reviewing your most recent store receipt is a straightforward way to see your remaining funds.

After you make a purchase with your EBT card, look at the bottom of the printed receipt. The amounts next to “EBT Food Bal” and “EBT Cash Bal” show your exact remaining balances for both SNAP and EBT Cash.

How Can I Keep My EBT Card Secure?

With phishing and spam attacks surging in Utah, it is important to recognize the various forms fraud can take. This awareness allows you to take the necessary steps to protect your benefits on time.

How Benefits Are Stolen

Thieves use several methods to steal benefits. Skimming and cloning involve criminals attaching devices to card readers to copy your card details and PIN. Phishing and smishing attacks use fake texts or emails, often claiming your account is frozen, to trick you into revealing your card number and PIN.

What To Do If Your Benefits Are Stolen

A federal program allows Utah to replace SNAP and EBT Cash benefits stolen via skimming, cloning, or phishing from October 1, 2022, through September 30, 2024. To qualify, you must meet several requirements:

  1. Report the theft to Workforce Services within 30 days.

  2. Change your PIN.

  3. Request a new card.

Reimbursements are limited to two per year and do not cover losses from card sharing.

Other Common Issues with EBT Cards and How to Resolve Them

Beyond security threats, you might run into other common problems with your EBT card. Knowing how to handle these issues can help you access your benefits without unnecessary delays.

Card Is Worn, Bent, or Unreadable

The magnetic stripe on your Horizon card can wear out from repeated use. Bending the card or exposing it to heat can also damage the embedded chip, making it unreadable at checkout.

  • Call the Horizon Card Helpdesk at 800-997-4444, as listed on the EBT basic instructions page, to request a replacement.

  • Confirm your mailing address for the new card, which usually arrives in 7–10 business days.

  • While you wait, you can check your balance using the ConnectEBT mobile app or the Benny app.

Forgotten or Locked PIN

If you enter the wrong PIN four times in a row, your card will be locked for security. It is also common to forget your PIN, especially if you do not use the card frequently.

  • Reset your PIN by calling the automated line at 800-997-4444. You will need to verify your identity with your date of birth and Social Security number.

  • You can also reset your PIN on the ConnectEBT portal or through its mobile app.

  • Create a new four-digit PIN that is easy for you to remember but hard for others to guess. Avoid using repeating numbers or your birthdate.

Purchase Declined Despite Having Funds

A 'transaction denied' message can be confusing when you believe you have funds available. This often happens if benefits for the month have not been deposited yet. The transaction may also be declined if you try to buy non-SNAP-eligible items with food benefits or use EBT Cash when only food funds are available.

  • Check your exact balance before you shop by calling the helpdesk, looking at your last receipt, or using a mobile app.

  • Know your specific benefit deposit date so you know when your account is refilled.

  • Separate SNAP-eligible items from other goods and pay for them in different transactions.

  • If your card is declined in one checkout lane, try another one in the same store.
