Several factors can cause a delay in your EBT deposit, even when you expect it on a specific date.
Administrative Or Eligibility Snags
Your deposit may not load if your case is pending due to an overdue report, missing documents, or inconsistent information like a Social Security number mismatch. Benefits are not authorized until you provide the required paperwork and the agency resolves the issue, leaving your card without funds on the expected day.
Caseworker And Office Delays
State offices sometimes face staffing shortages or have caseworkers managing very large caseloads. These workforce bottlenecks can slow down the processing of daily issuances, pushing benefit approvals and deposits into the next business cycle.
System-Wide Interruptions
Widespread issues can also postpone payments. A sudden surge in applications, disaster-related demand, or technical problems like hardware failures can interrupt the overnight process that loads benefits onto EBT cards for all recipients.
Changes Or Reviews On Your Case
If you recently reported a change in your income or household size, your benefits may be held until the new amount is calculated and confirmed. Additionally, your case could be placed on a temporary hold for a quality control review, which also pauses the deposit.
Do EBT Benefits Expire or Roll Over?
In South Dakota, unused SNAP and TANF benefits automatically carry over to the next month. Your balance remains available as long as your account shows activity, which includes any purchase, withdrawal, or balance inquiry.
If your card is inactive for 274 consecutive days, the state will expunge benefits. This process permanently removes any monthly deposit that has been in the account for that duration, and expunged benefits cannot be replaced.
The 274-day inactivity clock continues even after your case closes. You can still spend any remaining balance, but it will also be removed if the card stays unused for the same period.

What to Do if Your EBT Balance Runs Out Early
Seeing a zero balance on your EBT card before the end of the month can be incredibly stressful. It's a situation many households face, but you don't have to navigate it alone. There are several immediate, practical steps you can take to secure food for your family.
Request Expedited or Replacement SNAP Benefits
If your account balance is zero and you have less than $100 in cash, you may qualify for emergency benefits. This process can also help if your card was stolen and benefits were lost.
Contact the DSS SNAP line at 877-999-5612 or visit a local office. State that your household has no food and ask for “expedited SNAP.”
You will need a photo ID and proof of your current income and assets. A recent pay stub or a bank account screenshot will work.
If benefits were stolen, you should also request “replacement benefits.” You must complete a form while your card is frozen by calling customer service at 800-604-5099.
Before you finish, confirm the worker’s name, the benefit amount you will receive, and the exact date it will be loaded to your account.
Ask DSS to Recalculate Your Monthly Allotment
Your monthly benefit amount isn't set in stone. If your financial situation changes, you can request a recalculation from the Department of Social Services at any time.
Report changes online through your DSS account or call 877-999-5612 to request Form DSS-ESD-525. This applies to new expenses like rent increases or different childcare costs.
List every new expense and attach proof, such as a medical receipt or lease addendum. South Dakota allows you to submit photos from your phone.
Submit the packet by hand, fax, or upload. Your benefits are adjusted from the date you report the change, not when it's processed.
