Your balance is available online through the ebtEDGE portal, via the Benny mobile app, by calling a 24-hour customer service line, at an ATM, or by looking at your last store receipt. All these options are available around the clock.
1. Online Through ebtEDGE
Accessing your account information online is a straightforward way to see your current funds and transaction history.
Go to the ebtEDGE website and choose the Cardholder Login option. You can also find a link to the portal on the South Dakota DSS EBT page.
Enter the 16-digit number from your EBT card and press Login.
Create or enter your User ID and Password, then agree to the terms.
Your current SNAP and EBT Cash balances will be displayed on the account home screen. You can view the last 60 days of activity under the “Transactions” tab.
2. Using The Benny App
Using a mobile app can be a convenient way to monitor your funds on the go.
Download the Benny app from Google Play or the App Store and create a free account with your phone number or email.
Tap “Link EBT,” choose South Dakota, and enter your ebtEDGE card number and PIN to connect your account.
The app will then show your real-time SNAP and EBT Cash balances.
Benny also offers cash back on eligible SNAP purchases at participating stores, including Walmart, Costco, and Walgreens.
3. Calling The 24-Hour Customer Service Line
Calling the toll-free customer service line gives you access to your account information through an automated system or a live agent.
Dial 800-604-5099.
Enter your 16-digit EBT card number and PIN when prompted.
An automated system will announce your SNAP and EBT Cash balances and your last ten transactions. You can stay on the line or press “0” to speak with a live agent.
The automated menu offers English and Spanish. Live interpreters for Lakota, Vietnamese, and over 170 other languages are also available by asking an agent, as detailed in the DSS language-access notice.
4. At An ATM
Checking your balance at an ATM is another option, and South Dakota does not permit surcharges for EBT balance inquiries.
Insert your EBT card into the machine, enter your PIN, and choose the “Balance Inquiry” option.
To avoid fees, use a surcharge-free ATM. You can find nearby locations using the Allpoint or MoneyPass network locators.
If an ATM screen shows a fee for the inquiry, cancel the transaction and find a different machine.
5. On A Store Receipt
Reviewing your most recent grocery receipt is a simple way to find your remaining funds.
After you make a purchase with your EBT card, the printed receipt will show your remaining SNAP and EBT Cash balances, usually near the bottom.

How Can I Keep My EBT Card Secure?
With phishing and spam attacks on the rise in South Dakota, EBT cardholders are facing increasingly sophisticated scams. Understanding the different forms these threats can take is important for protecting your benefits before they are compromised.
How EBT Benefits Are Stolen
Thieves use card-skimming devices on store PIN pads to copy your card details and PIN. They also send fake texts or calls, known as phishing, to trick you into sharing your information. Scammers may also use social media with fake offers to steal your card credentials.
What To Do If Your Benefits Are Stolen
If your SNAP benefits are stolen, a federal program may offer a replacement for thefts between October 1, 2022, and December 20, 2024. You must report the theft to your Benefits Specialist within 30 days. Replacements are capped and limited to two per fiscal year. Stolen EBT Cash benefits are generally not replaced, but you should still report any theft immediately.
Other Common Issues with EBT Cards and How to Resolve Them
Beyond theft, several routine issues can disrupt your EBT card access. Knowing how to troubleshoot these common problems can help you restore your benefits quickly and avoid unnecessary stress.
Forgotten or Locked PIN
Entering the wrong PIN three times in a single day will lock your card until the next calendar day for security. This can also happen if you forget your four-digit number after a long period without using the card, a common issue detailed in the state's EBT FAQs.
Wait until the next calendar day for the lock to clear automatically.
Choose a new PIN immediately through the ebtEDGE mobile app, the ebtEDGE cardholder portal, or by calling 800-604-5099.
Write down your new PIN and store it in a safe place, separate from your EBT card.
Card Declined Due to Physical Damage
A card can be declined if the magnetic stripe is worn or the chip is cracked. Storing your card next to magnets, like those in a cell phone, or with keys can accelerate this wear and tear, preventing point-of-sale machines from reading it.
Report the card as damaged to request a free replacement, which typically arrives in 5–7 business days. You can do this through the ebtEDGE app, web portal, or customer service line.
Keep your new card in a protective sleeve and avoid scratching the magnetic stripe.
While you wait for the replacement, you can freeze the damaged card in the ebtEDGE app to prevent any accidental use.
Balance Does Not Update or Appears Incorrect
Your account balance may appear stale if a third-party app has not refreshed successfully or if recent deposits are still clearing. For instance, an app like Benny may stall if your login credentials expire. It's always best to confirm your balance with an official source.
If using Benny, try unlinking and re-linking your card to force a fresh connection.
Cross-check your real-time balance using an official method: your last store receipt, the ebtEDGE mobile app, the online cardholder portal, or the automated phone line at 800-604-5099.
