Why Your EBT Deposit Might Be Late and What to Do

When required documents like renewal forms or income verification are missing or incomplete, DWSS flags the case as pending. Benefits for both SNAP and TANF are withheld until the household provides the necessary information and a worker finalizes the case.
DWSS Staffing Shortages and Processing Backlogs
High vacancy rates and large workloads within the agency have created significant application backlogs. Because of these internal delays, routine benefits may not load until staff can clear the queue of pending cases and other required actions.
Sanctions or Compliance Penalties
TANF cash assistance can be reduced or stopped for failing to meet work-program or child-support obligations. Similarly, SNAP can be suspended for program violations. Your account will remain empty until you resolve the sanction or the penalty period ends.
Initial Application Processing Time
For new cases, benefits will not appear until the application is fully approved. DWSS has up to seven days for expedited SNAP or up to 30 days for regular SNAP and TANF to issue benefits after approval.
Do EBT Benefits Expire or Roll Over?
Unused SNAP and TANF benefits automatically carry over each month. Your balance will continue to accumulate as long as your EBT card remains active and your case stays open.
To prevent your benefits from being removed, you must use your card at least once every 274 days. Any transaction, including a simple balance check, counts as activity and resets the clock.
If an account is inactive for 274 consecutive days, the Division of Welfare and Supportive Services will permanently expunge the funds. These benefits cannot be recovered.
A separate rule applies to summer-only S-EBT food benefits. These funds expire 122 days after they are issued and do not follow the standard rollover policy.
