How Can I Keep My EBT Card Secure?

With phishing and spam attacks on the rise in Wyoming, it is important to recognize the different forms these scams can take. Knowing how thieves operate allows you to protect your benefits and act quickly if they are compromised.

How EBT Benefits Are Stolen

Thieves use skimming devices on checkout PIN pads to clone card data. Fraud also occurs through smishing texts or spoofed calls from fake agencies asking for your card number and PIN. Scammers may also create fake EBT websites or social media pages to steal your login credentials through malicious links.

What To Do If Your Benefits Are Stolen

Wyoming can replace SNAP benefits stolen between October 1, 2022, and December 20, 2024, if reported within 30 days. This federal reimbursement authority expires after December 20, 2024. To file a claim:

  1. Call EBT Customer Service at 877-290-9401 or visit the DFS.

  2. Request a new card and choose a new PIN.

EBT Cash benefits are not eligible for this replacement.

Other Common Issues with EBT Cards and How to Resolve Them

Beyond security threats, you might encounter other issues with your EBT card. Here are a few common problems and the steps you can take to resolve them quickly and efficiently.

Card Declined When You Travel

If you travel to certain states like California, Nevada, or New York, you may find your Wyoming EBT card is declined. This happens because of an automatic fraud-prevention system that blocks transactions in several high-fraud states, a policy detailed on the benefit information page.

  • Call the EBT help line at 877-290-9401 before or during your trip to request a temporary travel override.

  • You will need to verify your identity with your date of birth and the last four digits of your Social Security Number.

Wrong or Forgotten PIN

Entering an incorrect PIN several times in a row will lock your EBT card for the rest of the day. This is an anti-fraud measure that assumes someone may be trying to guess your code.

  • Wait until after midnight for the lock to automatically reset.

  • If you have forgotten your PIN, call EBT Customer Service at 877-290-9401 or log in to the ebtEDGE portal to create a new one.

Benefits Not Loaded on Time

SNAP benefits are issued in Wyoming between the 1st and 4th of each month, based on the first letter of your last name. A weekend or federal holiday falling on your deposit date can delay the funds until the next business day. Occasional system maintenance can also affect processing times.

  • First, confirm your exact issuance date from your approval notice or by calling DFS.

  • Check your balance before you go shopping. You can see your real-time EBT balance by downloading the Benny mobile app. Other options include using the ebtEDGE website or calling the number on the back of your card.

  • If your funds are still missing by noon on the following business day, contact your county DFS office to check for any issues with your account.
