Your EBT card delivers benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and EBT Cash, such as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). Keeping track of your available funds is a smart way to manage your budget and avoid payment issues at the checkout, regardless of which benefits you receive.

This guide outlines how to check your EBT balance in Virginia, from using a mobile app to calling the customer service number.

How to Check Your EBT Balance in Virginia

Virginia EBT cardholders have five convenient ways to check their SNAP and EBT Cash funds. You can check your available funds online, through a mobile app, over the phone, at a store’s point-of-sale terminal, or on your last shopping receipt. For EBT Cash benefits, you can also use an ATM for a balance inquiry.

1. Check Online Through ConnectEBT

Accessing your account information is straightforward on the official state-approved website.

  1. Go to the ConnectEBT website and choose “Virginia EBT” from the menu.

  2. If you are a new user, create an account by providing the primary cardholder’s Social Security number, date of birth, and 16-digit card number. You will then create a user ID and password.

  3. After logging in, your current SNAP and EBT Cash amounts are displayed on the landing page. You can also view your transaction history under the “Transactions” tab.

2. Use the Benny Mobile App

Using a mobile app provides a quick way to see your current funds directly on your phone.

  1. Download the Benny app and tap “Get Started.”

  2. Enter your 16-digit Virginia EBT card number and PIN to link your account.

  3. Your home screen will display your SNAP and EBT Cash amounts along with recent transactions.

Benny also offers cashback at many popular stores, including Walmart, Costco, and Walgreens.

3. Call the Customer Service Line

Calling the automated phone line is another option for getting your account information 24/7.

  1. Dial 1-866-281-2448 and choose your preferred language.

  2. When prompted, enter your 16-digit EBT card number using your phone’s keypad.

  3. An automated system will read your current SNAP and EBT Cash amounts.

Live interpreter service is available for Spanish, Vietnamese, Korean, and Chinese. You can ask an agent or use the menu to find support for other languages.

4. Review a Store Receipt or POS Terminal

Checking your funds is also possible while you are out shopping.

After any purchase made with your EBT card, your remaining account total is printed at the bottom of the store receipt.

Additionally, most grocery store point-of-sale (POS) terminals allow a free balance inquiry. Simply insert or swipe your card, enter your PIN, and choose the “Balance” option to see your funds on the screen.

5. Make an ATM Inquiry

Using an ATM is an option for checking your EBT Cash benefit amount, but it will not show your SNAP funds.

Insert your EBT card at an ATM that shows the Quest® or NYCE® logo, enter your PIN, and choose “Balance Inquiry” from the checking account options. To avoid fees, use a surcharge-free ATM from a network like the Allpoint Locator.

Since ATMs only show EBT Cash funds, you can check your SNAP amount by using the Benny app or logging into the ConnectEBT website.

How Can I Keep My EBT Card Secure?

Phishing and spam attacks targeting EBT users in Virginia are on the rise. Recognizing the different forms these scams can take is the first step toward protecting your benefits and taking prompt action if fraud occurs.

How Benefits Are Stolen

Thieves primarily use two methods to steal benefits. Phishing scams via text or email trick you into sharing your card details, while card skimming involves devices on card readers that illegally copy your information when you swipe your card.

What To Do If Benefits Are Stolen

Virginia can replace SNAP benefits stolen by skimming or phishing between October 1, 2022, and December 20, 2024. To file a claim:

  1. Change your PIN and report the theft to the EBT Helpdesk or local DSS within 30 days.

  2. Submit the signed SNAP EBT Replacement Request & Client Attestation form.

Replacements are capped at two months of benefits, with a limit of two claims per year. This policy does not cover stolen EBT Cash funds.

Other Common Issues with EBT Cards and How to Resolve Them

Beyond security threats, everyday issues can disrupt your access to benefits. Here are three common problems Virginia EBT cardholders face and the straightforward steps to resolve them quickly and efficiently.

Card Locked or Repeated PIN Errors

Entering the wrong PIN four times in a row will automatically lock your card for 24 hours as a security measure. Your card might also be locked if you used the “Lock/Unlock” feature in the ConnectEBT mobile app and forgot to unlock it before making a purchase.

  • Wait 24 hours for the card to unlock automatically, or call the Virginia EBT Client Customer Service line at 866-281-2448 to reset your PIN.

  • If you manually locked your card, open the ConnectEBT app or website and tap “Unlock My Card.”

  • Choose a new four-digit PIN that is not your date of birth or has repeating digits.

Benefits Show "$0" or "Pending" on Reload Day

Monthly benefits are deposited according to a fixed schedule based on the last digit of your SNAP case number. Funds arrive just after midnight, so checking your balance too early on your deposit day may show a zero balance.

  • Confirm your deposit date, which corresponds to the last digit of your case number: 0-3 (1st), 4-5 (4th), 6-7 (7th), or 8-9 (9th).

  • Check your EBT balance for free using the automated phone system at 866-281-2448. You can also download the Benny app to view your real-time balance and find cashback offers.

  • If your benefits have not appeared by noon on your scheduled day, contact your local Department of Social Services or submit an inquiry through CommonHelp.

Transaction Declined at the Grocery Checkout

A declined transaction often happens when trying to buy non-approved items like hot foods, vitamins, or toiletries. It can also occur if you choose “Credit” instead of “EBT” on the payment terminal.

  • Separate non-SNAP items from your purchase and pay for them with a different method.

  • Always choose the “EBT” option on the keypad before entering your PIN. If you receive both SNAP and EBT Cash, you may need to specify “Food” or “Cash.”

  • Confirm you have a sufficient balance before you shop. You can find more information on the official Virginia EBT card page.

  • If the card reader has trouble with the chip, ask the cashier to try swiping the magnetic stripe instead.
