Your EBT card delivers benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and EBT Cash programs like Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). You may receive funds from one or both. Regularly checking your balance is important for managing your household budget and making sure your funds last the entire month, helping you avoid payment issues at the checkout counter.
This guide outlines the different ways to check your North Dakota EBT balance, from using a mobile app to calling customer service.
How to Check Your EBT Balance in North Dakota
You can check your North Dakota EBT funds in four main ways: online through the ebtEDGE cardholder portal, with the Benny mobile app, by calling the toll-free customer service number, or by looking at your last grocery receipt. Each method is free and available statewide, allowing you to choose the one that is most convenient for you.
1. Check Your Balance Online
Accessing your account information online is straightforward through the state's official portal.
Go to the North Dakota Electronic Benefits Transfer page and find the “Cardholder Portal/ebtEDGE” link.
On the ebtEDGE homepage, choose “Cardholder Login.” You will need to create an account with your 16-digit EBT card number, Social Security number, and ZIP code, then set a User ID and password.
Once you sign in, the “Account Summary” screen will show your current SNAP and EBT Cash funds. You can also click “Transaction History” to review deposits and purchases.
If you forget your password, use the “Forgot Password” link on the login screen to reset it.
2. Use The Benny App
Using the Benny app provides a quick way to view your current funds on your phone.
Download the Benny app, sign up with your phone number or email, and enter your ZIP code.
Link your North Dakota EBT card to the app.
From the home screen, tap the “Balance” icon to see your current food and EBT Cash benefits. You can refresh the information at any time by swiping down.
Benny also gives users automatic cash back when they shop at many popular stores, including Walmart, Costco, and Walgreens.
3. Call The Customer Service Line
Calling the toll-free customer service line is an option available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Call 1-800-630-4655 and have your 16-digit card number ready.

How Can I Keep My EBT Card Secure?
With phishing and spam attacks on the rise in North Dakota, EBT users are facing more sophisticated threats. Recognizing the various forms these scams can take allows you to take the necessary protective steps before your benefits are compromised.
How EBT Benefits Are Stolen
Thieves use several common methods to steal benefits. Card skimmers attached to payment terminals can capture your card data for cloning. Phishing texts and calls create a false sense of urgency, directing you to fake websites or phone systems to trick you into revealing your card number and PIN.
What To Do If Your Benefits Are Stolen
If you suspect fraud, you must act quickly to protect any remaining balance.
Immediately call 800-630-4655 to cancel your card.
Report the theft within ten days and submit Form SFN 270.
North Dakota may replace stolen SNAP benefits for thefts that occurred after October 1, 2022, but not TANF cash. This federal replacement authority is temporary and may end after September 30, 2025.
Other Common Issues with EBT Cards and How to Resolve Them
From a worn-out magnetic stripe to a forgotten PIN, several issues can prevent you from using your EBT card. Here are three common problems and how to handle them.
Card Is Declined or Will Not Swipe
A transaction can fail if the card’s magnetic stripe or chip is worn out or if your balance is too low for the purchase. It may also be declined if you are traveling and have previously blocked out-of-state transactions.
Ask the cashier to re-swipe the card or manually key in the number.
Check your balance on your last receipt or by calling 1-800-630-4655. The free Benny app also shows your real-time SNAP and EBT Cash balance.
If the card is damaged, request a free replacement by calling the helpline or through the ebtEDGE website. A new card will be mailed within about seven business days.
Before traveling, log in to the cardholder portal or call the helpline to unblock out-of-state purchases.
Forgotten or Locked PIN
For security, your card will automatically lock after three incorrect PIN attempts. This prevents anyone from using your card until you reset the PIN.
Call the FIS customer service line at 1-800-630-4655 and follow the prompts to create a new PIN after verifying your identity.
If you have your card, you can also reset the PIN using the ebtEDGE mobile app or website.
Choose a new four-digit PIN that is easy for you to recall but hard for others to guess.
Card Is Lost, Stolen, or Damaged
Whether it was misplaced during a move, stolen, or simply stopped working from wear, a compromised card should be replaced immediately to protect your benefits.
Freeze or cancel the card right away by calling 1-800-630-4655 or by using the cardholder portal or ebtEDGE app.
You can order a replacement during the same call or online session. The new card will be sent to the address on file.
If you have moved, update your information in the North Dakota Self-Service Portal to make sure the card arrives at the correct address.
