Dial the toll-free EBT Customer Service line at 1-888-622-7328.
Follow the voice prompts, which are available in English and Spanish, and enter your 16-digit card number followed by your 4-digit PIN.
The automated system will read your current SNAP and EBT Cash balances.

If you need to report a lost or stolen card, reset your PIN, or require assistance in another language, press “0” or remain on the line to speak with an agent. You can find more details on language-access services online.

4. At An ATM

Performing a balance inquiry at an ATM is another option, particularly for checking your EBT Cash funds.

Use an online ATM locator to find a surcharge-free Quest-branded, MoneyPass, or CashPoints machine near you.
Insert your EBT card, enter your PIN, and choose the “Balance Inquiry” option.
Select “Checking” to view your EBT Cash balance or “Food Stamp” to see your SNAP balance. Your funds will be displayed on the screen and printed on a receipt.

5. On A Store Receipt

Checking your last store receipt is a simple way to keep track of your remaining funds.

After you make a purchase using your EBT card, the bottom of the printed receipt will show your remaining balances for both SNAP (FNS) and EBT Cash (TANF).

How Can I Keep My EBT Card Secure?

Phishing and spam attacks are increasingly common in North Carolina, targeting EBT users with deceptive messages. Recognizing the different forms of fraud is the first step in protecting your benefits and taking swift action if they are compromised.

How EBT Benefits Can Be Stolen

Thieves use physical skimmers on store terminals or ATMs to copy your card's magnetic stripe and capture your PIN. Digital fraud is also common, using "smishing" texts and emails that trick you into revealing your card number and PIN on fake websites or phone lines.

What To Do If Your Benefits Are Stolen

If you suspect fraud, take these steps immediately:

Freeze your card using the ebtEDGE app or website.
Call the NC EBT Help-Line at 888-622-7328 to request a new card.

The program that allowed for the replacement of stolen SNAP benefits in North Carolina has ended. As of December 21, 2024, stolen SNAP and Work First/TANF cash benefits are not replaced.

Other Common Issues with EBT Cards and How to Resolve Them

Beyond fraud, everyday issues can disrupt access to your benefits. Knowing how to handle a locked card, a damaged stripe, or an incorrect balance can help you resolve problems quickly.

Card Is Locked or PIN Is Forgotten

If you enter the wrong PIN four times in a row, the system automatically locks your card until 12:01 a.m. the next day to prevent unauthorized use. This can happen from simple keypad errors, or if someone else, like a child, tries guessing the number.

Wait until after midnight to try again if you remember the correct PIN.
If you've forgotten it, call the North Carolina EBT Customer Service line at 1-888-622-7328 and follow the prompts to choose a new one.
Pick a new four-digit code that is difficult to guess and avoid storing it with your card.

Card Will Not Swipe or Is Damaged

Frequent use, bending, or exposure to heat can damage the magnetic stripe or chip on your EBT card. When this happens, a point-of-sale (POS) terminal may not be able to read it, leading to declined transactions even with a sufficient balance.

Gently wipe the magnetic stripe with a soft, dry cloth and try using a different register at the store.
If the card is still unreadable, call 1-888-622-7328 to request a replacement. It should arrive by mail in 7–10 days with your existing balance and PIN intact.
If you need immediate food access, contact your county Department of Social Services (DSS) to ask about getting a temporary voucher.

Balance Shows $0 or an Unexpected Amount

A terminal might show a zero balance even when you expect to have funds. This could be because you're recalling last month's balance, a recent purchase is still pending, or you accidentally checked the wrong card number.

Check your last grocery receipt, which shows the ending balance from that transaction.
Call the customer service line at 1-888-622-7328 for an automated balance update.
Log in to the ebtEDGE portal or use the free ebtEDGE mobile app.
