Your EBT card provides benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and EBT Cash programs like Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). Regularly checking your balance is a good habit for managing your household budget and making sure you have funds available.
This guide covers the various ways to check your New York EBT funds, from using a mobile app to calling the customer service line.
How to Check Your EBT Balance in New York
You can check your New York EBT funds in several ways. These include logging into an online portal, using a mobile app, calling the automated phone line, looking at your last store receipt, or visiting an ATM. Each method gives you quick access to your current SNAP and EBT Cash amounts so you can stay on top of your budget.
1. Check Online Through Official Portals
Accessing your account information online is a straightforward way to see your latest transactions and deposits. New York uses two websites for this: ebtEDGE and myBenefits.
On ebtEDGE, select “Cardholder Login” and enter your 16-digit EBT card number and PIN. First-time users will need to register and create a user ID and password.
On myBenefits, sign in with your NY.gov credentials, find the “EBT Balance” tile, and click “Check Your Balance” to view your funds.
2. Use The Benny Mobile App
Using a mobile app can give you an automatic look at your funds. The Benny app, available for iOS and Android, shows your updated account information after a one-time setup.
Download the app from the App Store or Google Play.
Sign up with your phone number or email and enter your ZIP code.
Link your card by providing your 16-digit EBT number and date of birth. Your SNAP and EBT Cash amounts will then appear on the home screen.
Benny also provides cashback on eligible EBT purchases at participating retailers, including Walmart, Costco, and Walgreens.
3. Call The EBT Customer Service Line
Calling the state’s toll-free number connects you to an automated system or a live agent 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Dial 1-888-328-6399 and choose your preferred language.
Follow the menu prompts for account information.
Enter your 16-digit card number and PIN to hear your current SNAP and EBT Cash amounts.
The service line supports Spanish, Chinese, Russian, and Haitian Creole, with support for additional languages available. You can also remain on the line to speak with an agent about a lost card or transaction dispute.
4. Review Your Last Purchase Receipt
Checking your most recent store or ATM receipt is a simple way to confirm your funds. After you make a purchase or withdrawal, the receipt will print your remaining SNAP and EBT Cash amounts at the bottom. Just look for the line item listed as “SNAP Balance” or “Cash Balance” to see what you have left.
5. Visit An ATM For EBT Cash Balance
Using an ATM allows you to check your EBT Cash account, but it will not show your SNAP food benefits.
Insert your EBT card and enter your PIN.
Choose the “Balance Inquiry” option to see your total EBT Cash amount on the screen.
You can find surcharge-free ATMs to avoid extra fees. Since this method only displays your EBT Cash funds, you can check your SNAP food benefit amount by using another option in this guide or by using the Benny app.

How Can I Keep My EBT Card Secure?
With phishing and spam attacks on the rise across New York, it's important to know how scammers operate. Understanding the various forms fraud can take allows you to spot threats and take the necessary steps to protect your benefits on time.
How EBT Benefits Are Stolen
Benefits are stolen through card-skimming, where devices on store terminals copy your card and PIN. Phishing is also common, using fake texts or emails to trick you into entering details on spoofed websites. Treat any request for your PIN as fraud, as official agencies will never ask for it.
What To Do If Your Benefits Are Stolen
If your benefits are stolen, replacement is possible under specific conditions. SNAP benefits taken between October 1, 2022, and December 20, 2024, are eligible for reimbursement, limited to two claims per federal fiscal year. You must act within 30 days of discovering the theft:
First, freeze or cancel the card and request a new one.
Submit a replacement application online or through your local office.
Other Common Issues with EBT Cards and How to Resolve Them
Beyond security threats, everyday issues can disrupt access to your benefits. Here are three common EBT card problems you might face and the straightforward steps to resolve them quickly.
Card Won’t Swipe, Insert, or Tap
Everyday wear, scratches, or exposure to magnets can damage the card's magnetic stripe or chip, making it unreadable at checkout terminals.
First, try the card at a different register or another store to confirm the problem isn't with the store's reader.
If the card is damaged, request a replacement by calling the EBT Customer Service line at 1-888-328-6399 or through the ebtEDGE portal. Your benefits remain secure in your account while you wait.
NYC residents can get a same-day permanent card at the Over-the-Counter office or a temporary one at an HRA Benefits Access Center. Mail replacements take 7-10 business days.
Invalid PIN or PIN Tries Exceeded
Entering the wrong PIN three times will lock your card for 24 hours as a security measure. New cards also need to be activated with a PIN before they can be used. A frequent error with Pandemic-EBT cards involves using a Social Security Number instead of the child's date of birth for activation.
To activate a card or reset your PIN, call 1-888-328-6399. You will need your 19-digit card number and the required date of birth digits.
You can also change your PIN anytime on the ebtEDGE website or its mobile app.
If your card remains locked after a reset, wait 24 hours before trying again. For a manual reset, you can speak with a live EBT representative.
Benefits Not Showing or Balance Is $0
An empty balance can happen for a few reasons. Your deposit might be delayed if the scheduled date falls on a holiday weekend. It could also signal that your Periodic Recertification paperwork is overdue, or that benefits were simply used faster than you realized.
First, confirm your current EBT balance. You can check it using the Benny app, the ebtEDGE portal, or by calling the toll-free customer service line.
If funds haven't appeared as expected, contact your local Department of Social Services to check if a Recertification or Mid-Cert report is overdue. You can submit missing documents online through ACCESS HRA for NYC or myBenefits.ny.gov for the rest of the state.
When a holiday causes a delay, funds typically post the next business day without any action needed from you.
