Every time you use your EBT card for a purchase or cash withdrawal, the printed receipt will show your remaining SNAP or EBT Cash balance at the bottom.

5. Visit an ATM

Using an ATM is an option for checking your EBT Cash account, but it will not show your SNAP funds.

ATMs that display the Quest® or NYCE® logo will show your EBT Cash balance for free if they are part of a surcharge-free network. Since this method does not display SNAP funds, you can check that balance through the online portal or with the Benny app.

Look for ATMs with MoneyPass, AllPoint, or Co-op branding, as most are surcharge-free for EBT users.
Use an online tool like the Allpoint Locator and filter for surcharge-free machines.
Before proceeding with the transaction, confirm on the ATM screen that the balance inquiry is free of charge.

How Can I Keep My EBT Card Secure?

Phishing and spam attacks targeting EBT users are becoming more common across New Mexico. Recognizing the various methods thieves use is the best way to protect your benefits and take action quickly if a theft occurs.

How Benefits Are Stolen

Thieves use digital scams like “smishing” texts to trick you into sharing your card number and PIN. They also use physical skimming devices on card readers to capture your information, create a cloned card, and drain your account.

What To Do If Your Benefits Are Stolen

SNAP benefits stolen electronically from October 1, 2022, to December 20, 2024, may be replaced if a claim is filed within 30 days of the loss. Thefts after this date and EBT Cash losses are not eligible for replacement.

Report the theft online at YESNM, by calling 1-800-283-4465, or visiting an Income Support Division office.
Provide a list of the unauthorized transactions and keep the compromised card until a new one arrives.

Other Common Issues with EBT Cards and How to Resolve Them

Beyond security threats, you might run into other common problems with your EBT card. Knowing how to handle issues like a damaged card or a forgotten PIN can save time.

Card Will Not Swipe, Tap, or Insert

A worn magnetic stripe, a bent chip, or small tears can prevent a card reader from processing your transaction at a Point-of-Sale (POS) terminal or ATM.

First, try a different payment terminal. If the card still won’t read, ask the cashier to process a manual food-benefit voucher. Keep your copy of the voucher.
If the card itself is damaged, call 1-800-283-4465 to cancel it and order a replacement. You can find more details on the New Mexico EBT page. Be sure your mailing address is current.

Forgotten or Locked PIN

It's easy to forget your Personal Identification Number (PIN). Entering the wrong PIN four times in a row will automatically lock your card for security until midnight.

You can change your PIN by calling 1-800-843-8303 and following the prompts. You will need your card number, date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security Number.
Alternatively, you can reset your PIN through the ebtEDGE website or mobile app after creating an account.
Choose a four-digit number that is easy for you to remember but difficult for others to guess. Never write the PIN on your card.

Balance Shows “Zero” or Seems Wrong

Your balance might appear incorrect due to posting delays from recent transactions, merchant reversals, or temporary holds placed by gas stations.

Check your real-time balance by saving receipts, calling the 24-hour FIS hotline, or using the ebtEDGE portal.

If a transaction still seems incorrect after 24 hours, you have 90 days to open a dispute claim by calling the FIS dispute line. Have the receipt handy when you call.
