EBT cards deliver benefits for programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and EBT Cash, such as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). Monitoring your available funds is important for household budgeting and avoiding shortages, whether you receive benefits from one or both programs.
This guide details the different ways to check your EBT balance in New Jersey, from a mobile app to the customer service phone line.
How to Check Your EBT Balance in New Jersey
You can check your New Jersey Families First EBT funds in five ways: through the official NJFamiliesFirst.com website, with the Benny mobile app, by calling the 24-hour customer service line, by looking at your last store receipt, or by using an ATM. Each method is free and available across the state.
1. Check Online at NJFamiliesFirst.com
Accessing your account through the official state portal allows you to see your current funds and transaction history.
Go to the NJFamiliesFirst.com website.
If you're a new user, register for an account. Otherwise, sign in with your User ID and password.
You will need to enter your card number, the last four digits of the primary cardholder’s Social Security number, and your ZIP Code to verify your identity.
Once signed in, your SNAP and EBT Cash balances are displayed on the home screen. You can also view your transaction history or use the "Card" menu to lock your card or request a replacement.
2. Use the Benny App
Using the Benny app lets you track your funds in real time directly from your phone.
Download the app from the App Store or Google Play and open it.
Create an account using your mobile number or email address.
Tap “Add Card” and enter your 16-digit Families First card number, your name, and the card's expiration date.
Your current SNAP and EBT Cash balances will appear in the "Benefits" tab, which updates automatically after every transaction.
Benny also provides cashback on eligible EBT purchases at participating stores, including Walmart, Costco, Walgreens, and Trader Joe’s. The cashback is automatically credited to your Benny wallet.
3. Call the Customer Service Line
Calling the automated phone line is another way to get your account information.
Dial 1-800-997-3333. Have your 16-digit EBT card number and 4-digit PIN ready.
Follow the automated prompts to hear your SNAP and EBT Cash balances and information about your last deposit.
To speak with a live agent, press zero after entering your card number.
The line has prompts in English and Spanish. For assistance in other languages, including Chinese, Korean, and Arabic, you can ask an agent for an interpreter. More information is available on the state's language access page.
4. Review Your Last Receipt
Checking the printed receipt from your most recent transaction is a straightforward way to see your remaining funds.
After making a purchase at a grocery store or a withdrawal from an ATM, your remaining SNAP or EBT Cash balance will be printed at the bottom of the receipt.
5. Make an ATM Inquiry
Using an ATM is an option for checking your EBT Cash funds, though it will not show your SNAP food benefits.
Insert your Families First card at an ATM that displays the Quest® logo, enter your PIN, and choose the "Balance Inquiry" option. The machine will show your available EBT Cash balance on the screen and can print it on a receipt.
To avoid extra charges, use surcharge-free ATMs that show the Quest®, MoneyPass®, or Allpoint® logos. You can also find nearby free locations using the ATM locator in your NJFamiliesFirst.com account or by calling the customer service line.
Since ATMs only show your EBT Cash balance, you will need to use another method to check your SNAP funds. You can check online at NJFamiliesFirst.com or use the Benny app to see both your SNAP and cash balances.

How Can I Keep My EBT Card Secure?
With phishing and spam attacks increasing in New Jersey, it's important to recognize the tactics thieves use. Knowing the different forms these scams can take helps you take the right steps, like locking your card on the NJFamiliesFirst.com portal.
How EBT Benefits Can Be Stolen
Thieves use skimming devices on card readers to copy your card data while a hidden camera captures your PIN, then create a clone card to drain your account. Another method is phishing, which uses fake texts or calls claiming your account is frozen to trick you into revealing your card number and PIN.
What To Do If Your Benefits Are Stolen
Federal authority for benefit replacement has ended. SNAP or Work First NJ benefits stolen on or after December 21, 2024, cannot be replaced. You may still file a claim for theft that occurred before this date, but for any current losses, prevention is the only protection available.
Other Common Issues with EBT Cards and How to Resolve Them
Beyond security concerns, you might face other common card issues. Knowing the reasons behind them and the steps to fix them can help you manage your benefits without interruption.
Card Declined at The Register
It can be frustrating when your card is declined even with funds in your account. This often happens if you’ve used the card lock feature and forgot to unlock it before checkout. Another common reason is entering the wrong PIN more than once, which temporarily blocks the card for security.
Sign in to NJFamiliesFirst.com or open the ConnectEBT mobile application to unlock your card. Wait for the confirmation before trying to pay again.
If the card was blocked from incorrect PIN entries, wait about 30 minutes before re-entering the correct PIN.
Forgotten or Blocked PIN
Your 4-digit PIN is your key to using your benefits. If you forget your PIN or enter it incorrectly three times, your card will be blocked from making transactions until you reset it.
Call the 24-hour customer service line at 1-800-997-3333 and follow the prompts to create a new PIN. You will need your card number, date of birth, and Social Security Number.
You can also change your PIN instantly on the NJFamiliesFirst.com website or within the ConnectEBT app.
Create a PIN that is easy for you to remember but avoid writing it on the card itself.
Difficulty Checking Your Balance
Sometimes the usual ways of checking your balance are unavailable. The customer service line might be busy, the official website could be down for maintenance, or you may not have a recent receipt handy.
Call 1-800-997-3333 for automated balance information, available 24/7.
Log in to NJFamiliesFirst.com to see your real-time balance and transaction history.
Use the ConnectEBT mobile application for the same information on your phone.
You can also download the Benny app to check your SNAP and EBT Cash balance and get cashback on groceries.
Every purchase receipt also prints your remaining balance, so it can be helpful to save your latest one.
