2. Use The Benny Mobile App

Using the Benny app allows you to check your food and cash funds on your smartphone.

Download the “Benny – EBT Balance” app from your phone’s app store.
Open the app, choose “Minnesota,” and enter your EBT card number to link your account.

Calling the automated, toll-free number is another way to get your account information. The number is 888-997-2227. Live agents are available, and multilingual support is offered in English, Spanish, Somali, and Hmong, with other languages available upon request.

Call 888-997-2227 and select your preferred language.
Enter your 16-digit card number, followed by your 4-digit PIN when prompted.
Press “1” to hear your SNAP and EBT Cash totals.
You can stay on the line to hear recent transactions or to speak with an agent.

4. Review Your Point-Of-Sale Receipt

Looking at your most recent store receipt is a straightforward way to see your remaining funds.

Complete a purchase or a cash-back transaction using your EBT card.
Look for the “EBT Food Balance” and “EBT Cash Balance” at the bottom of the receipt.
Keep the receipt for your records as the amount updates after each use.

5. Make An ATM Balance Inquiry

Visiting a participating ATM allows you to check your EBT Cash funds. This method will only show your EBT Cash amount, not your SNAP funds.

Find an ATM with a “Quest,” “MoneyPass,” or “Allpoint” logo. You can find a surcharge-free Allpoint ATM online.
Insert your EBT card and enter your PIN.
Choose the “Balance Inquiry” option. If asked, choose “Checking.”
The machine will print or display your current EBT Cash amount. Confirm the screen shows a “$0.00 fee” before you proceed.

How Can I Keep My EBT Card Secure?

With phishing and spam attacks rising across Minnesota, it is important to recognize the different forms these scams can take. Knowing the methods thieves use is the first step toward protecting your account from unauthorized access and potential loss.

How EBT Benefits Are Stolen

Thieves steal benefits electronically through several common methods. These include card-skimming devices on retail PIN pads, fake text messages (smishing) with malicious links, and scam phone calls (vishing). Other tactics involve fraudulent social media offers or look-alike websites that capture your card details and PIN.

What To Do If Your Benefits Are Stolen

SNAP benefits stolen electronically between October 1, 2022, and December 20, 2024, may be replaceable. Since the federal reimbursement program has expired, thefts after this date are not covered. To file an eligible claim:

Report the theft within 30 business days.
Submit the state’s claim form from the Minnesota EBT card site within 10 more business days.
Get a new card.

Note that EBT Cash benefits are not replaced for electronic theft.

Why Was My Transaction Declined?

A “Transaction Not Approved” message can appear for several reasons. You might have entered the wrong PIN, or the keypad may have timed out before you finished.

Another common cause is trying to buy a non-SNAP-eligible item with food benefits. It can also happen if your card is frozen using the ebtEDGE security feature.

Re-enter your PIN slowly. Four incorrect attempts will lock your card until midnight.
Ask the cashier to separate food and non-food items and run the transaction again.
Check your account balance using an app like Benny or the ebtEDGE portal. If the card is frozen, you can unfreeze it in the ebtEDGE app.

I Forgot My PIN or My Card Is Locked

Forgetting your PIN is common, especially if you do not use the card frequently. Entering the wrong PIN four times in a single day will automatically lock the card for security.

This can also happen if another authorized household member changed the PIN without informing you.

Call Minnesota EBT Customer Service at 888-997-2227 and follow the prompts to set a new PIN.
Use the “Change PIN” feature on the ebtEDGE mobile app or website.

My Card Is Damaged and Won't Work

Physical damage from daily use, like cracks, scratches, or exposure to heat, can make your card's magnetic stripe or chip unreadable.

You will know it is damaged if it will not swipe and the cashier's manual entry fails, or if chip readers report a malfunction.

Request a replacement by calling the customer service number on the back of your card. A $2 replacement fee may apply.
Confirm your mailing address to ensure the new card arrives, typically within 5-7 business days.
If the damage causes hardship, contact your county agency to ask about an emergency voucher while you wait.
