Before paying, ask the cashier to run a balance inquiry or choose the balance option on the payment terminal.

Find an ATM with a QUEST or NYCE logo. Balance inquiries are always free, but using a surcharge-free ATM helps you avoid other fees.
Insert your EBT card and enter your PIN.

How EBT Benefits Are Stolen

Thieves steal benefits using card skimmers on store readers to copy data and create clone cards. They also send fake texts or make robocalls pretending to be the DTA, using phishing links or direct requests to get your card number and PIN.

What To Do If Your Benefits Are Stolen

If your benefits are stolen, act immediately. Federal funds can replace SNAP benefits stolen via skimming or phishing from October 1, 2022, to December 20, 2024. This program was not extended, so benefits stolen after that date may not be replaceable. To report fraud:

File a claim with the DTA within 30 days of the loss.
Immediately reset your card's PIN.

Damaged or Unreadable Card

A scratched magnetic stripe, a bent card, or a worn-out chip can make your card unreadable at checkout terminals. This damage often results from normal wear and tear or from being kept near magnets or keys.

If the card can't be read, ask the cashier to try entering the card number manually. If that also fails, you will need a replacement.

It can be frustrating to find your balance is lower than expected or to be charged a surcharge when withdrawing cash. These issues often arise from not having real-time balance information or using out-of-network ATMs.

Avoid surcharges by using an approved ATM. You can find a list of surcharge-free ATM locations on the state's website.
